  • Animation Test ft Link!

Hello folks, I'm currently an animator at WayForward games, and have decided to do a little animation test/showcase using Spine, since it's rapidly become just about my favorite animation software ever.

I'm doing this test using an image of Link I scanned out of the Hyrule Historia (and then modified fairly heavily) because I like the art style. I'm also planning on reskinning this character with a personal design so that I can use it without infringing on Nintendo, since I have no permission to use their character.

Anyway, feel free to leave comments/critiques/whatever as I go. For now, have a simple idle animation:

The only thing I don't like it the thumb in front that has a fold that is a bit too much up, and maybe the fron ear that gets its tip a bit too low rotating.
About all the rest, wwow so nice! I'm admiring how you made his hair deform and I'll probably try to copy it some time! ( I also quite like the thumb behind on the contrary, it's a masculine hand yet it's so simple!)
In some other posts someone suggested to raise a bit the chest to suggest he's breathing which seems to me like the possible finishing touch, really cute test! (:

Very nice pseudo 3D effect!

Have a run cycle, folks!

Very nice 😃 Though in the run cycle, I believe both the sword and the belt overuse the effect - also there is something weird going on with his left hand 🙂

Thanks for the thoughts. at some point, I'm going to draw a second and third set for the hand drawings. For now, i'm just working with the base drawing and it gets a little weird. Still not entirely certain what the second hand needs to be (though I know I need a palm-view at some point)

I think you could improve the way his feet step in front 'cause at the moment the run looks a bit too innatural, as if his legs would be shorter when they get to the front of his body, you know?
Also I'd expect the belt to go along with the arm that goes to the front rather than the opposite direction, I mean the torso usually follows along how the arms rotate, right?

That's more an issue with the drawing I'm working from. It was never meant to lean as far forward as it is doing in this run. I'll see if I can fake that into submission somehow.

....what? No. Tilt, Rhythm, and Twist, my friend. The hips always move counter to the shoulders. That contrapposto is exaggerated here, for the sake of cartooniness, but even if I'd left it more subtle it would still exist. Making the hips move with the shoulders is the exact opposite of right.

I may tone down the belt rotation, though, in future passes.

What I meant is that the belt is going to sides instead of following its place on the torso which of course twists in the opposite direction but in this case it's going a bit too innatural, I understood what you meant too, I did a sketch, maybe it's easier this way:

Also I thought that if you consider his belt as the place where his hips take place, thus raising them, you could improve easily the animation just by moving the leg a bit further and animating the tissue under the belt as if it got shorter maybe.

Though I totally understand that when someone sketches just for the sake of testing something but not really to make a character do all sorts of stuff it's not like one would feel compelled to fix everything XD

I like the character 🙂 I'm looking forward to some new stuff from you!

"Contrapposto"? Are you Italian too?O: or is Italian terminology used in the field and I didn't know it?

gotcha. I'll play with that idea a bit on my next pass.

haha, yeah, at least a few words kinda sneak in. Contrapposto is one such word that I run into surprisingly often despite the fact that I don't speak any italian.

Hi again! I started back in on this. Did some edits to the previous animations and made new ones:

Gorgeous!
