Interesting 2D Skeletal Animation in the Wild
Every now and then, I see people playing games on their phones or PCs or whatever,
and I notice some 2D skeletal + mesh animation that's inspiring or, at the very least, a bit intriguing.
What skeletal animation have you seen that made you curious or want to use skeletal animation?
TV, games— new and old and really old—, whatever. It doesn't matter. This topic takes any samples.
I'll go first:
I was watching my girlfriend play some recent Team Lava (now Storm8) games.
Bubble Mania had an interesting procedural skeletal posing thing going on with its main character (who happens to be the shooter avatar in this bubble shooter/puzzle bobble game) during the aiming phase.
The thoroughness of the aiming-posing isn't very visible in this video but it's pretty fun seeing it in action in-game.
Some of the transition animations throughout the game are a bit rough (or jarringly missing), but for the most part, it's just charming all over.
Tembo looks like it's got a lot of stuff going on! Looks good. I wonder if it's Spine?
Although I think the animation quality could be better, posting because its quite a hit
I don't think that's skeletal animation. Everything looks frame-by-frame. And not even chopped much into parts.
Pharan :I don't think that's skeletal animation. Everything looks frame-by-frame. And not even chopped much into parts.
Pretty sure it will be, might just be stepped anims. I say that because of the skins of the character/boat/enemies/more.. if not I am extremely impressed that they don't run out of texture memory
Check out the programmatic facing-animation on the pigs.
Also, look! Nonuniform scaling!
EDIT:
The video doesn't do the game justice. I downloaded it (it's free on Android and iOS) and it looks and sounds gorgeous, the game design is solid and the entire implementation is just amazing. They're also getting with the times with ad placement (making most of them optional, videos-for-bonuses, stuff like that).
I really do wonder if they're using Spine for this one.
Doesn't rovio use spine?
There was an artist that works from them on these forums who showed their show reel, on it it showed angry birds graphics being animated in spine
Modded Facerig+Live2D. Hilarious.

I have Tembo the Badass Elephant. Nothing that special (it seems that only tembo and few regular enemies done in skeletal 2D, everything else in 3d), but style and big boss battles (bosses are in full 3D) are great, and its a fun short platformer.
Need to check out the Canoli game - like how those rats move.
PS:
Also offtopic but i like to go through oldschool game characters and bosses and see how they were animated and most of them kinda look like exact same thing could be done with Spine without loosing any quality of animation.

Like this for example. It's interesting that despite how impressive this character looks, there is nothing that can not be done with skeletal animation in Spine. The only "challenging" part is crab's shell that movies with perspective but even that can be done with good use of meshes. 图像因不支持 HTTPS 被隐藏。 | 仍然显示
The kind of things you can achieve if you don't pigeonhole yourself into doing everything the "skeletal way".
Turns out Knights and Bikes was using Spine. Had no idea. Good job!
I've worked with Flash for both classic animations and skeletal animations, and I've always been looking for different/cheaper alternatives. Furthermore, working with anything other than MovieClips can sometimes have akward results and exporting the animations into a format that can be easily integrated with games usually takes a bit of customization to get right too.
Spine looks great and is catered for not just game devs, but looks simple enough for non-artistic programmers to make use of (which I think is really useful). Really excited to see where this goes and this looks promising. It's great that you actually have a fully functioning program to download and use.
I've pledged towards the Kickstarter, although not as much as I would like. Hopefully, if I spend less on coffee and eating out next month I might be able to up it a notch
